BRITISH MAN DIES IN SEA TRAGEDY

A foreign man who drowned after being swept out to sea in the Hua Hin area last week has been identified as a British pensioner, aged 75, from Liverpool, according to UK media reports. A Hua Hin police spokesman said that fisherman had found the man’s body near a pier around 4:30pm on Wednesday 15th April. Apparently he had been swimming in the same location every morning since arriving in Hua Hin, and that the conditions normally appeared calm. However on that day conditions were rougher, and it is believed he entered the sea near the mouth of the bay, possibly from Hua Don Beach (featured image above), which was previously used as the channel for the ferry crossing to Chonburi. This area is deeper than the surrounding waters due to dredging to accommodate larger boats.

Most reports are attributing the incident to the strong rip currents that can occur at any time of year along the coast, but due to the location this could potentially be a rip tide, and we explain below the difference, as well as the three types of hazard that are possible at any beach/coastal location that everyone should be aware of, and some key tips as to how to handle both rip currents and rip tides.

FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE FOREST FIRES NEAR HUA HIN

Residents across much of Hua Hin and Cha Am were affected by smoke and other air pollution emanating from several forest fires to the north west of Hua Hin, close to the Black Mountain golf course and water park. The Suomi NPP satellite detected three heat hotspots in the area (approximately shown on the map further down in this article), with one in the morning of Tuesday 27th January, and another two subsequently, which were followed up by reports from citizens. Officials from the Phetchaburi Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment, and an initial team of 20 officers from three different teams went to the area to contain and extinguish the fires, followed up with a further 25 personnel and a helicopter on the ensuing days.

All the detected fires were part of one cluster, which would have had the same starting point, although neither the details of that nor what caused the fire to start have yet been reported. The terrain made some parts difficult to access, which is where the helicopter was utilised to scoop up water from nearby resources and then drop it to damp down the fires; 30 water drops were carried out, releasing a total of 15,000 litres of water. By Wednesday afternoon (28th January) officials announced that the situation was under control, although work and observation was continuing into Thursday, with firebreaks being reinforced and inspections aimed at preventing flare-ups.

  • A Beach Treat
CHA AM OFFERING A NATURAL BEACH EXPERIENCE

Have you ever wished to go to a beach completely free of umbrellas, deckchairs, tables and other things cluttering the natural beauty? Well, after the initial Wednesdays in Cha Am promotion, where the local authorities set aside a five kilometre stretch of the beach to be an ‘umbrellas and deckchairs not welcome’ space, they have now expanded this so that every weekday at the southern end of Cha-am Beach the beach will be completely open to create a more natural, and relaxed beach experience, free to be used by beachgoers as they wish – so, for example, pitching their own tent or placing their own beach mat so they can enjoy the beach as nature provided, rather than the rather more crowded experience at the central part, similar to the area on Hua Hin Beach near the Hilton, particularly at weekends.

As part of this effort, repairs have been completed to the beachfront steps, which had been damaged by seawater erosion, restoring them to their original condition. The engineering department has also been instructed to improve the area on South Cha-am beach to facilitate tourists for pitching tents, laying mats, and parking. Due to the number of people visiting from Bangkok on weekends, businesses are allowed to provide the normally ever present umbrellas, chairs and tables that have historically been there, but the hope is that local people can enjoy the beach more during the rest of the week. • Bangkok Flights Edge Closer
EZY AIRLINES GRANTED LICENCE AND ROUTE ALLOCATION

The granting of a civil aviation operating licence and route allocation for flights between Hua Hin and Bangkok to Ezy Airlines, who are operated by M-Landarch Co Ltd, has brought the prospect of faster travel to the capital a step closer, over two decades since such a service was previously available. The confirmation from officials was announced during a Prachuap Khiri Khan Joint Public and Private Sector Committee (JPPC) meeting this week, which was discussing the province’s tourism performance. One of the meeting’s discussions was to discuss the idea of a formal letter of support regarding the launch of scheduled flights.

It is still expected that previously announced flights from the airline, to Phuket, Surat Thani and Hat Yai, will commence this month, and the suggestion is that the Bangkok route may also be available from the same time. A promotional sightseeing flight last month, out of Hua Hin Airport, used a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX, capable of carrying 10 to 12 passengers, which is thought to be the type of aircraft that will be used for all routes. No details have yet been given for the first flights to the southern destinations, or for the capital flights, although starting dates and schedules may be affected by the work being carried out on the airport. The flight to Bangkok is likely to take around 40 minutes, and would almost certainly be into and out of the Don Mueang International Airport, rather than Suvarnabhumi.
